American Scholastic Challenge 2010
Walden's 8th grade competed this challenging on-line current events competition along with another 18,000 eighth grade students nationally. The national average score was 53% correct. Seventeen of our 8th graders received merit certificates for scoring above the national average. The top scorer received a medal. Congratulations to our first, second, and third place winners: Eric Elder, Adam Eldemire, and Madeline Tighe, who scored 80%, 76%, & 74% respectively.

Middle School Spring Trip Walden Middle School students spent 2 fun-filled days in St. Louis for the spring trip. Last Thursday morning we arrived at the Cahokia Indian Mounds in Illinois. These mounds are the remains of the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico. After a visit to the interpretive center, we had the opportunity to climb the stairs to the top of Monks Mound. After this we went to the St. Louis Arch where we visited the Westward Expansion Museum and watched an IMAX movie about the Lewis and Clark Exhibition. Then students took the tram to the top of the Arch. After dinner at the Hard Rock Café, students played a round of Galaxy Mini Golf, an inside course that is illuminated by black lights! On Friday we began our day with a visit to the St. Louis Zoo and then went to the incredible, fantastic City Museum! Thank you to Mrs. Elder and Mrs. Fitts for leading the trip and a special thanks to all the parents - Barry Christensen, John Brennan, Terry Cohen, Jason Tharp, Barbara Dowling, John Mandrola, Michelle Wise, Sheila Haney, and Dana Strull - who were fabulous chaperones!
A great time was had by all!

6th Grade Proverbs
The 6th grade has recently completed units on India and China. In the process of learning about these countries, they had interpreted proverbs attributed to Buddha and Confucius, and then penned their own original proverbs. Enjoy our budding philosophers:
Hate is forever; friends are forever more. - Emma Rosenberg
If a man steps on a snake and is bitten, no one is truly at fault; however, if he is bitten
trying to kill the snake, he can only fault himself. - Alec Diaz Even a mighty lion was once a playful cub. - Alexis Kinslow Life's Hard; get over it. - Ian Kinslow
Think before you do. - Deepak Sharma The superior man has a great mind, not brute strength. - Sam McCalpin A bird only flies when he thinks he can do it. - Chris Cullinan Do not waste your time finding yourself; spend your time being yourself. - Martina Thurman Something that you have, you do not want;
except when you lose it, then you realize you need it. - TJ Haas Your brain may be getting smarter, but your mind is getting wiser.
- Rosemary DeMarco Trust yourself and good things will happen. - Madelyn Bray When you are born, your parents give you the first step in life, but you must walk.
- Henry Mankowski Happiness and positive attitude yields to a long, well-lived life. - Katie Rompf You cannot ski without a mountain. - Kamron Akrami You can never finish the race unless you start. - Aaron Gabriel The more you sleep, the more you waste, the more you waste your life. - Sydney Brenzel The older you are, the younger you want to be; the younger you are, the older you want to be. So be happy about your present age. - David Borders A man with clothes of silk who holds a heart of stone is nothing compared to the man who wears rags and keeps a heart of gold. - Nicole Dowling When you're on fire, don't spread it. - Kinsey Emerson
He who is content with his life wins the greatest reward.
- Kalin Clarkson If you are envious of what someone else has, think of what you do have; it will bring you happiness.
- Rachel Wise The worker wins the race, while the sluggish person takes disgrace.
- Matt Baisden
Please check that recycling box at school and at home..... Walden fifth grade students are beginning to work on an architecture project that will entail them working on scale cardboard models. If you have any thin cardboard boxes such as snack boxes (Triscuits, Wheat Thins, Pop Tarts, etc.) or any cereal boxes that you can pass along to the Lower School art program - it will be much appreciated! The thin cardboard allows the students to utilize and manipulate them as tools in creating their structures. You can pass any such items onto me or leave them just outside the Lower School art room door. Thanks, Martin Rollins |
